Mayor Miron Announces Plan for First Annual Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament
Stratford, Conn. (June 22, 2006) - Stratford Mayor James R. Miron today announced plans for the first annual Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament. The tournament is scheduled for Monday, August 21, 2006 at the Mill River Country Club in Stratford. All proceeds from this non-partisan tournament will benefit the Disability Resource Center, the Evergreen Network, the Special Olympics and the South End Community Center.
“I encourage residents and local businesses to support the Mayor’s 1st Annual Charity Golf Tournament,” said Mayor Miron. “Through an enjoyable day of golf, we can change not only the life of a deserving neighbor, but in many cases, the lives of their families as well.”
The tournament is being co-chaired by Stratford residents Agnes Stegner and Tony Ross with support from an all-volunteer golf committee.
Agnes Stegner, who has lived in Stratford for over 45 years, has been a member of the Mill River Country Club for more than 40 years. In her 35 plus years of fundraising, she has raised close to $1 million for charity. Agnes is a recipient of the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance John Wentworth “Good Sport” Award, which recognizes individuals who have promoted amateur sports in their communities. Agnes has served as chair of St. Vincent’s Heart-to-Heart tournament and co-chair of both the Michelob Tournament and the Cardinal Sheehan Classic. She has also raised money for the Tommy Fund.
Tony Ross served as a Stratford firefighter for 28 years. He was the only Democrat elected Councilman in the 9th district for four terms. He currently serves on the Short Beach Commission, the Inland Wetlands Commission and the Conservation Commission. He was instrumental in the development of the WWII Monument and is also a member of the Korean Memorial Committee. He ran the Democratic Town Committee Golf Tournament for 10 years.
“I thank each and every volunteer who is giving of their time to support these organizations that have such a tremendous impact on our community,” said Mayor Miron.
The tournament will begin at 12:30pm with an 18 Hole Shot Gun Start. Foursomes are $900 and individual golfers are $225. This includes 18 holes of golf with cart, goody bags, lunch, course refreshments, cocktail hour and award dinner banquet.
