PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS the Stratford Waterfront Authority was created by Special Act of the Connecticut General Assembly in 1957 to improve and enhance the natural waterways of the Town and otherwise serve as the steward of the Town’s waterfront and harbor resources; and

WHEREAS the Stratford Waterfront and Harbor Management Commission was created by Town Ordinance in 1988 to have all of the powers and duties of the Waterfront Authority plus all of the powers and duties granted to municipal harbor management commissions by the General Assembly, including the power to prepare and implement a Harbor Management Plan for the Town of Stratford; and

WHEREAS the Waterfront and Harbor Management Commission has prepared and implemented a Harbor Management Plan which has been duly approved by the State of Connecticut and adopted by the Town Council to guide the most desirable use and conservation of the Town’s waterfront and harbor management area on the Housatonic River, Long Island Sound, and other tidal and navigable waters at Stratford; and

WHEREAS the Stratford Waterfront and Harbor Management Commission has developed and maintained public facilities for boating, fishing and other types of water access including the boat launching complex at the foot of Birdseye Street, and operates other programs and facilities in the public interest such as the vessel-waste pump-out boat to protect water quality and the Harbor Master vessel to maintain public safety; and

WHEREAS the Stratford Waterfront and Harbor Management Commission in conjunction with other agencies of the Town, guides safe and beneficial waterfront use and development and works in coordination with agencies of the State of Connecticut and Federal Government including the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to preserve, enhance and develop the Town’s tidal and navigable waters; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, James R. Miron, Mayor, proclaim Wednesday, August 22, 2007 as Stratford Waterfront and Harbor Management Day in the Town of Stratford in recognition of the Commission’s 50th Anniversary of service and in honor of all citizens who choose to serve as stewards of the Town’s most important natural assets.
