Stratford Community Services


Stratford Community Services is a municipal agency committed to the positive, healthy development and well-being of Stratford residents, with a special emphasis on children, youth, and families. Stratford Community Services was first funded in 1972 as a community response to the problem of substance abuse. Today, it is both a planning and a coordinating agency along with providing direct services.

Stratford Community Services is the local Youth Service Bureau and works closely with the Stratford Youth and Family Advisory Board and the School Readiness and Child Care Advisory Council to assess community needs, develop plans to meet those needs, and implement programs directly or in cooperation with other organizations

Announcements

Inside Out, Community Service's teen theater company, will open its 28th performance season on Monday, December 8, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. at the Stratford Theatre, 2422 Main Street, Stratford.  This year's show titled, Livin' Respect. . .One Skit At A Time, is an original show that deals with issues facing today's youth including conflict resolution, internet safety, diversity and cliques.  The show is free and open to the public.

The Youth Committee of the Stratford Youth and Family Advisory Board is pleased to announce the 2008-09 Youth As Resources awards and mini-grants.  Grant applications are accepted through December 5, 2008.  Please click here for an application.  Award nominations are accepted until January 2, 2009.  Please click here for an announcement and click here for the nomination form. 

Residents interested in early care and education are invited to participate in the Stratford School Readiness and Child Care Advisory Council Leadership Work Group, who is developing a working blueprint of the early childhood community, Stratford's Promise to Young Children.  To find out more information or get involved, call Stratford Parents' Place at 381-6992. 

Stratford Parents' Place is pleased to announce Champions Preschool Program will open on July 1, 2008 at Stratford Academy/Johnson House.

Stratford Community Services is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Evening hours are available by appointment.

Counseling & Social Services

There are times in our lives when stresses create difficulties that feel overwhelming. It is not always easy to cope. All counseling and social services are strictly confidential. Counseling fees are based on a sliding scale and no one is refused services for inability to pay.

Connecticut Energy Assistance Program
Stratford Community Services accepts applications from Stratford residents meeting income guidelines for the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program. Applicants are required to provide proof of residency, income, entitlements, assets, bank statements and heating bills. Stratford Community Services sends the applications to Action for Bridgeport Community Development (ABCD) for approval.

These benefits are available to help offset the heating costs for the 2008-09 winter. The amount of the benefit depends on income, assets, the number of people in the household, and whether a household member is under six years, over 60 years, or disabled. Benefits are paid directly to the fuel company or utility.  Please click here for more information about eligibility for the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program Contingency Heating Assistance Program. Additional information is also available through the Connecticut Department of Social Services.

Stratford residents can call for an appointment beginning September 15, 2008.  Applicants who heat their homes with OIL will be scheduled beginning in mid-October and applicants who heat their homes with GAS or ELECTRICITY will be scheduled beginning in December on a first-come, first-serve basis.

To find out more about the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program or to schedule an appointment to complete an application, call 385-4095. Senior citizens (age 60 and over) may contact Stratford Senior Services, 385-4050, for an Energy Assistance appointment.
