Stratford Recreation Department Lifetime Activities
All program registrations take place at the Recreation Office at Short Beach Park unless noted in the description. All Programs Subject To Change. Non-residents may take particular classes for an additional $5 fee. Updated August 3, 2008 Tai Chi for Seniors 524960 Section 12 The SECC will offer a Tai Chi class for seniors this fall. Classes will be on Fridays starting September 12 for 6 weeks from 11:15 am - 12:15 pm. Class is open to residents ages 60 & older. Class is free. Tai Chi for Adults 524960 - Sections 03 & 04 This introduction to the Tai Chi program is designed to promote health and wellness in adults by offering participants with low impact, weight bearing exercise introduction. The class is held at the South End Community Center for adults. The class is for six weeks and is on Tuesdays starting on September 9 from 7:05-8:05 pm. Registration begins August 25-September 7 at the Recreation Office or at South End Community Center or online. The fee is $25 for the six weeks. The second session begins October 28. Registration is October 13-24. Blood Pressure Screenings at SECC This program for seniors is offered in collaboration with the Stratford Health Department and takes place on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday from 10-12 noon in the South End Community Center Multipurpose Room beginning in September. This program is free. No appointment is necessary. SECC Community Food Pantry The South End Community Center offers emergency food pantry services to Stratford residents on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00am-12:00pm. Interested individuals must stop by the center to register and show proof of Stratford residency. Emergency food services are also available for those individuals who receive food stamp assistance or come with an agency referral. Individuals interested in donating to the Community Food Pantry should drop off food or supermarket gift cards to the South End Community Center during pantry hours. Coat Closet This program provides hats, coats, gloves, and socks to individuals in need on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am-12pm from October - March. Interested individuals must stop by the center or get a referral from area agencies to receive merchandise from the Coat Closet. New or slightly used donations are welcome. Individuals interested in donating to the Coat Closet should drop off items at the South End Community Center during regular office hours. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program) The South End Community Center in collaboration with the Internal Revenue Service and other agencies prepare income taxes for individuals in need during tax season. This program also serves as a financial literacy program encouraging participants to get checking and/or savings accounts, repair your credit as well as assist those who qualify with claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit on their returns. This program runs every Monday at Franklin Elementary School from 4-6 pm by appointment only starting Monday TBA and every Thursday from 6-8 pm and Saturday from 9:30-12:00 pm starting TBA by appointment only at the South End Community Center. Fitness Classes - online registration Pilates Class 529216 - Section 01 & 02
This is a combination of yoga, pilates and aerobics to develop physical fitness. It is a great class for those just getting back into exercising. Class meets on Monday and Wednesday nights at the Baldwin Center from 5:00-6:00 pm starting September 8-November 3. Cost is $80 for 8 weeks. Registration is August 11-29. The next session is November 17-January 14 with registration October 12-November 7. Head To Toe Fitness 524180 - Section 34 This class is a one hour workout that targets all of the 3 important exercise components - cardio, strength, and flexibility. It incorporates a low impact cardio warm-up, strength training and toning using hand weights and a stretching and cool down segment. It is recommended for beginner to intermediate fitness levels. The class will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-7:30 pm at Flood Aux Gym. The class begins September 16-November 6. The cost is $80 for 16 weeks. Registration is August 25-September 5. The Biggest Loser Fitness Class 524180 Section 60, 61 The program includes flexibility, toning and cardio exercises to create a fun total workout for those of us easing back into fitness mode. Class will also focus on nutritional needs as well as offer motivation and support. Class meets on Monday and Wednesday nights at the Baldwin Center from 6:15-7:15 pm beginning September 8- November 3. Registration is August 4-August 29. The fee is $80 for 16 classes. A second session will be offered beginning November 10 for 12 sessions. Registration is October 1-29. The fee is $60 for 12 classes. A third session is scheduled to begin January 5. Yoga relaxes as well as strengthens the body and develops concentration. This 10 week class meets on Tuesday nights beginning September 23 with a Beginner Class from 6:00-7:30 pm at the Baldwin Center. The Advanced Beginner class meets from 7:30-9:00 pm on Tuesday at the Baldwin Center. The Thursday night class begins September 25 with the Advanced Beginner class from 6-7:30 pm and the Beginner class from 7:30-9:00 pm. Fee is $80 for 10 weeks. Registration is August 25-September 19. This class will be held on Monday nights at the Baldwin Center from 5:30-7:00 pm for beginners and from 7:15-8:45 pm for Inermediates. On Wednesdays the Intermediate class will be 5:30-7:00 pm and the beginner class is 7:15-8:45 pm. Fee is $80 for 10 classes. Registration is August 25-September 5 at the Recreation Department at Short Beach. This session will start on September 8 and 10. Class size is limited. Class incorporates upper and lower body conditioning, cardio, stretching, abdominal exercises and toning. Perfect for the over 40 group. Class meets at the Baldwin Center on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30-7:30 pm beginning September 9- October 30. The fee is $80 for the 16 classes. Registration is August 11-29. The second session is November 13-January 20. Registration is October 12-November 7. Adult Tennis Lessons 422360 - Section 21 & 22
Adult lessons will start on Tuesdays September 16-October 21 at the Flood Tennis Courts. They will meet from 6:00-7:00 pm for beginners/advanced beginner and 7:00-8:00 pm for low intermediate/intermediate. Cost is $95 for six weeks. Registration is August 4-September 5 at the Recreation Office. There must be six participants registered for each class to be held. Women's Doubles League 422360 Section 22, 33
The Doubles league plays on Tuesday or Thursday nights at Flood Courts from 6-8 pm. Two separate days. Each day is $40 plus a can of tennis balls. The first session is May 13-June 19 and the second session is July 8-August 14. Fee is $40 and a can of balls. Registration is at the Recreation Office at Short Beach 2 weeks prior to the start of class. Karate class will be on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights at Franklin School from September 3-October 24. Registration for this session is August 4-29. The second session will begin October 27-December 19 with registration from September 22-October 20. Both sessions are 8 weeks. Dog Obedience Classes - online registration 549070 - Section 21-24
The Recreation Department has contracted with the Refined Canine Company to offer the following classes at Birdseye Municipal Complex: Puppy Socialization Class
Proper socialization ensures a sound, confident, well-behaved adult dog. In addition to learning some essential obedience exercises, like Sit, Down, Stay, Heel & Come, the class will cover common problems such as chewing, housebreaking and riding in the car, proper nutrition and grooming as well as preventing behavior problems such as aggression. Class is held on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30 pm. Basic Obedience for Dogs
Dogs will learn all the basic obedience exercises (Sit, Down, Stay, Heel & Come) in addition to enhancing the dog-owner relationship, teaching the dog how to be part of a human family, good manners and understanding canine communication. Class will be on Tuesdays from 7:45-8:45 pm and Wednesday from 6:30–7:30 pm. Intermediate Class
This is for dogs who have already completed a basic obedience class and have a clear understanding of walking without pulling (Heel), Come and Stay. The class will focus on refining the exercises, and provides a gradual introduction to off leash obedience. The class is structured to be fun for dogs and owners alike, with games and tricks to enhance the learning experience. Class is on Wednesday from 7:45-8:45 pm. All classes are once per week for 7 weeks at the Birdseye Municipal Complex. The first session begins August 26 and 27 with registration August 11-22. Dogs & Storks 549070 Sections 25 & 26 Presented by Michelle Douglas, Certified Dog Behavior Consultant and Certified Pet Dog Trainer, the Dogs and Storks semi private workshop is designed to help families prepare for life with kids and dogs. Siblings have classes why not the dog? We cover canine behavior, and how your dog may respond to infants, toddlers and pre-schooler's behaviors and activities. The fee is $45 per couple. Class meets on Saturday October 4 from 10:00-12:00 pm or Thursday December 4 from 6:30-8:30 pm at Birdseye Complex. First registration is September 15-26 and the second registration is from November 3-19. Please do not bring the dog. Sign Language Class I - online registration 549080 - Section 02 & 03
This is a Basic Sign Language I Course which will meet on Tuesdays beginning September 9 at Flood Middle School from 6:00 - 7:15 p.m. The class is open to the first twenty participants. The class will meet for 7 weeks. The fee is $80, which does not include the books. Registration is August 11-29. The second session is scheduled for October 28-December 16. A Sign Language II class will be offered for those who have taken sign language before and wish to refresh or continue learning. The class will be held at Flood on Thursday nights from 6:00-7:15 pm beginning TBA for 7 weeks. The cost is $75 plus the cost of the books. Registration is TBA. Boating Class
The Town of Stratford Waterfront and Harbor Management Commission in cooperation with the Recreation Department and the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection will offer the CT Basic Boating Certification course. The course will be held TBA from 6-9 pm. This 10-hour course includes instruction in navigation rules, legal requirements, safety afloat, and other topics that will help participants become sage and knowledgeable boaters. Students successfully completing this course will receive a course completion diploma that satisfies the education requirement for the CT Safe Boating Certificate which is required to operate a personal watercraft, power vessel and sail boats 19.5 feet or larger. The Band will play from 3:00-5:pm at the Baldwin Center on Sunday TBA. Admission is free. Snow date is TBA. Come enjoy the music! Stratford Community Band
The Band meets at Stratford High School from 7:30-9:30 pm on Tuesdays. There are no auditions or fees and the band is open to all area musicians. Throughout the year the band presents concerts at the Baldwin Center, the Jewish Home for the Elderly, the Dinan Memorial Center, a combined concert with the Stratford and Bunnell High School Bands, and a summer concert in Fairfield. It also participates in the Sister Cities Program. Anyone interested is welcome to join. Tentative Concert Dates: Tuesday June 10 at 7:00 pm at Paradise Green (raindate June 17), Tuesday July 22 at 7:00 pm at Paradise Green (raindate July 29). Nature Programs Come Join Connecticut Master Wildlife Conservationist, David Wright, for informative spring and summer discovery walks Exploring Natural Stratford - Forest to Shore. Walk Stratford's shore and trails and see them as you have never seen them before. The fee for each walk is $5.
