Special Populations Programs
All program registrations take place at the Recreation Office at Short Beach Park unless noted in the description. All Programs Subject To Change. Non residents may take particular classes at an additional $5 fee. Updated August 3, 2008 Special Populations
Programs open to everyone with a disability Any individual(s) with a disability are welcome to enjoy the programs offered by the Department. Anyone who needs special assistance to participate in the programs should contact the Recreation Department. Summer Learning Camp For learning disabled children, ages 7-12 who are currently enrolled in a Stratford School system resource room. This is a six-week program held at Birdseye Complex from 9:00 am. to 3:00 p.m. Registration will begin March 1 from 10-12 pm at the Recreation office through June 13. An evening registration and parents meeting will be held June 11 at 6:30 pm at the Birdseye Complex. The camp begins June 23 through August 1. Fee is $55. There is a limit of 20 children. Beach Wheelchairs The Community Development Agency has secured for the Town of Stratford 2 rover wheel chairs for use in the water and on the beach at Short Beach Park. The chairs are available for adults and children. Another adult over the age of 18 years old must accompany individuals while using the wheelchair. They are canvas and stainless steel and an umbrella is advisable. They are to be used on the deck and the sand and may go into the water up to the middle of the wheel. The wheelchairs are available for use be any individuals with a mobility impairment. Individuals must reserve the chair at least 24 hours in advance. The chairs may be reserved between the hours of 10:00 to 4:30 pm at Short Beach only. They are available mid June through Labor Day. A car license must be left with the office and will returned which upon the return of the chair. Individuals may reserve the chairs through the Recreation Department Office by calling (203) 385-4052 at least 24 hours in advance. Therapeutic Swim POOL CLOSED August 27 & 29, September 3 & 5 Wednesday and Friday Mornings at the Ella Grasso Center for Stratford residents only from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. and 11:30-12:30 p.m. starting September 10. Participants must have a doctor’s note to swim. Swim passes are available at the Recreation office for $10. Please call the office for cancellations.
